Venice is Sinking - Pulaski Heights
Venice is Sinking - Undecided
Venice - Arkansas
By far one of my favorite albums of all times, but the downside is that I have really depressing tastes when it comes to favorites. I'm not sure what it is that makes me love albums, but usually there is a really special feeling that kind of engulfs my heart, something to do with the instrumental atmosphere I guess.
But enough about that.
Venice is Sinking is from Athens, Georgia, home of the B-52s, R.E.M., Neutral Milk Hotel and plenty more. The sound of their for fathers really caries over, and where once the bands of that town used to talk about Love shacks and Lobsters living on Rocks, these days most of the people coming out of there sing about sad, sad love, and this band is no different.
The orchestral implementation is very familiar in that region, and done tremendously well when mixed with his and her wispy voices in songs like "undecided" and "Arkansas". Their voices alone bring a sense of urgency and honesty and with the instruments bring an ambient feeling of utter cold and loneliness that's inescapable.
There aren't enough words in my vocabulary to explain how much I love this album. It's like a favorite movie that you put on for comfort, starting from track one with "Pulaski Heights" which revs up the album for a grand start until the very end with "CSX" and "Blue by Late" which bring an utter sense of release from all the angst in the middle.
Well worth the listen, "Sorry about the Flowers" has a tremendous concentration of feelings that's only possible through music.
