"Jódete y Baila" by Novedades Carminha

Novedades Carminha - Jódete y Baila
Have you ever smoked a cigarette while eating a popsicle? Or maybe spray-painted a love note on the side of a shopping center? Something a little dirty, a little sweet, and perfect for summertime: that’s the kind of music Novedades Carminha makes. I have to say thanks to bandcamp for introducing me to this indie garage punk group from Spain, whose catchy music is proving to be an excellent soundtrack for my summer.
This is the title track from their album Jódete y Baila, which I believe roughly translates to “Fuck yourself and dance,” an admirable sentiment in any language. Like the rest of the album, it’s got a very lo-fi sound, which for me is part of what makes it so catchy; you can imagine these guys rocking out in a garage somewhere, more concerned with having fun than with sounding polished. “Jódete y Baila” is simple and repetitive, with a strong beat, and clocks in at just over two minutes—perfect elements for a danceable song. The drummer doesn’t skimp on the cymbals, which complement the scratchy vocals nicely. This whole song feels like it has a layer of static over it, punctuated by the catchy guitar riff. It makes me want to dance on a hot rooftop until I’m gritty with sweat and dirt.
Fun and carefree, this is a song about rocking out and not giving a shit. Fuck yourself and dance, indeed. You can download this album (or two others) by Novedades Carminha at http://novedadescarminha.bandcamp.com/ (they say they charge five bucks, but apparently the group never set up their PayPal, so I ended up getting it for free; too bad, I would have liked to give you some money, rockin' Spanish kids). Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go bum a cigarette and flag down an ice cream truck.

  1. This Spanish punk group (from Galicia) is the tip of the arrow of a lot of groups in Spain. They have a powerfull and funny direct. I would like to meet them in a concert with USA groups as Black Lips,...Who organizes it? When? Where?
