Ufomammut - Eve Pt. 1
Ufomammut - Eve Pt. 2
Italy has produced numerous amounts of wonderful things. Their food is delicious, the Roman Empire was something to brag about, and the movie "Suspiria" is badass. Not to mention Asia Argento is from Rome, and by god if only I could...anyway, music wise I haven't heard much from Italy. That is until I stumbled upon the psychedelic doom band Ufomammut. Ufomammut has been releasing albums since 2000. I have yet to be disappointed with any of their albums. Their latest release, "Eve", is like a monolithic battlecruiser flying through space, daring anything from aliens to black holes to fuck with it.
The riffs are heavy. And when I say heavy, I'm talking Electric Wizard/Sleep/Ancestors heavy. This album is not for the weak of heart. To go along with the beasty riffage are numerous amounts of synth and effects. The effects really add to the mind bending experience to that which is "Eve". It's like you're being bombarded with this gigantic, slow, lahar like riff and then to accompany it are these psychedelic effects. There is also use of an organ/piano type thing, which I totally enjoy as well. There are two songs that are around fourteen minutes, a ten minute song, and two songs that are around three to four minutes.
The first song, "Eve I" starts out heavy, mellows out for a couple of minutes while giving off an ambient sort of vibe, then culminates with an explosion of riffs and effects. The vocals in the first song are reminiscent of evil chanting monks of satan. "Eve II" stays pretty mellow throughout the song until the last couple of minutes. The song is riddled with effects, whispers and other eerie uses of organs and synths. The drumming is mellow until the end, where they sound like thundering war drums. "Eve III" has taken what was built up in the previous song and has gone all out in a groovy doom riff, with more bizarre effects. The vocals are not screamed, rather they are more like a battle cry. The vocals are also mixed together with everything else; they definitely are not in the foreground. "Eve IV" mellows out a bit, but not too much. They still have a pounding groove/doom riff, with tumbling drums. And there is more chanting/witch howls, along with spacey effects. About two and a half minutes into the song comes a screeching guitar solo that will make your body pine for more. After the solo the song continues to groove a bit more, until we arrive at the final track, "Eve V". The song starts out with a slow and heavy riff, along with more psychedelic effects. About five minutes into the song, the group cuts back on the psychedelics and focuses solely on a steady, gloomy riff. After a couple minutes of the slow and steady, the riff picks up a little bit, with random sound bites going off in the background, almost making you feel like you're having auditory hallucinations while listening to the music. Eleven minutes into the track, the music starts to wind down, and the song ends with an eerie guitar instrumental.
"Eve" is like a sonic exploration through time and space. It deserves a solid 9.5 out of 10. It's dark, it's heavy, it's psychedelic. This album is probably one of my favorites from 2010. Check it out as soon as you can.
