Cat's Eyes is a formation of some very awesome people in a very odd way. On one side you have Canadian Opera singer by the name of Rachel Zeffira. On the other side you have Faris Badwan, known as the front man for The Horrors. As odd as this is, now imagine their first gig is at the Vatican (Sadly, you can only find tidbits of news everywhere). This would all be a joke between Zeffira and Badwan if not for the fact that they are actually damn good.
Their EP starts with a wonderful self titled song that has one of those wonderful 70s psychedelic bass lines and a great vocal mix between him and her. It comes off as so old school, that it doesn't even seem presumptuous. The 70s nostalgia continues through in their second song which is reminiscent of a lost Carpenters song, due to the background oboe, remixed softly. And just like Karen Carpenter, Rachel Zaffira's voice is so soft and beautiful it comes out as incredibly tender.
The third and fourth songs follow the same pattern of something loud and then something very soft, and both of them are just so full of old memories that you can't help but wonder if this was really made in 2011. But the melodies, and the fine tuning of every instrument makes you not care at all.
By far this is my favorite EP of the year. I can't say enough good things about it, but instead of writing more gibberish, I feel like I owe it to you to just let you listen. You must go and buy this album now. There is no reason not to.
And lucky us, they will be coming out with a full length album this year. To celebrate here is a live performance of them doing a cover of Geoff Stephene's "The Crying Game".
